Thank you to all of my fellow Home Lovers out there who sent entries this past month. I had a great time going through all your pictures and hearing your wish lists and ideas for your spaces. It was actually quite difficult to select a winner, but I’m thrilled to announce Laura Ganchou as our September Home Lovers Room Makeover Contest Winner!
Laura sent pictures of a room that is currently under utilized in her home, looking to transform it into a cozy, quite retreat just for her! Laura juggles her busy life working full-time and raising 2 young boys with her husband. She’s more than deserving of little ‘escape room’ to relax and rejuvenate at the end of a full day! We all need a space that helps us recharge, so I’m excited to inspire Laura with a room concept just for her!
This space is tricky. A long, narrow room with the fireplace (gorgeous) on one end and a large picture window at the other end (letting in tons of natural light…also gorgeous). The bones are good, but it makes for a more thoughtful layout when it comes to the floor plan. The best way to tackle a space like this is to create a couple of defined seating areas, but use repeated colour, texture, and accessories that make each distinct area speak to each other…and that’s exactly what I’m recommending to Laura! This will make her oasis more useful and visually appealing.
Laura has a lot of good pieces that will be repurposed in the space, including this awesome vintage velvet tufted sofa! It’s always a good idea to choose one element as the inspiration for the ‘look and feel’ of a space and go from there. For this makeover, this vintage sofa is my jumping off point!
You can tell a lot about a personal style and tastes just by looking around someone’s home. Even if the home isn’t ‘perfect’ or exactly all the way ‘done’ yet. There are hints everywhere. Laura has a love for a mix of old and new. She leans more towards the warmth that comes from nostalgic pieces that ring true of the character found in “farmhouse” style…which doesn’t really have a definition, it’s more of a feeling with great visual appeal that invites you to come in, relax and stay a while. In this room concept, I’m relying on the strength of the mix of the warmth of painted wood, soft colors, the natural stone fireplace facade, and the spectacular use of interior textiles – all this creates a lovely place makes you feel at home.
